Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions regarding bookings, excursions, transfers, Fitz Camp, and travel tips.

General & Location
Our central office is located at Av. San Martín 55, esq Trevisan, El Chaltén, Santa Cruz Province, Argentine Patagonia. You can contact us via WhatsApp or email to plan your trip, or visit us in person.
El Chaltén is located 220 km north of El Calafate (the nearest commercial airport). It is reached by regular bus (approx. 3 hours) or vehicle along National Route 40 and Provincial Route 23. If coming from Chile along the Carretera Austral, you enter by crossing Lago del Desierto.
We operate throughout the peak and shoulder trekking seasons: from October to April. For private services, custom transfers, or off-season inquiries, please reach out to us directly.
Patagonian weather is notoriously dynamic: you may experience bright sunshine, strong winds, and cold rain all in a single day. We strongly advise dressing in layers (the "3-layer system"): thermal base layer, insulating mid-layer (fleece or lightweight down jacket), and waterproof/windproof shell jacket, plus sturdy trekking boots.
Yes! Our team speaks English and Spanish fluently. We happily assist international travelers via WhatsApp, email, and in person at our El Chaltén office.
Lago del Desierto & Excursions
The main difference lies in duration and scope of activities:

• One Shot Vespignani: A half-day program (~6.5 hours with transfer or 2 hours at the reserve). It includes boat navigation on Lago del Desierto, 2 hours of self-guided hiking at Vespignani Glacier Reserve (green, yellow, and red trails), and snacks at the dome.
• Two Glaciers: A full-day program (~9 hours with transfer). It combines the Vespignani boat tour and trek with free time at Punta Sur to explore coastal trails and hike up to Huemul Glacier and emerald lagoon, allowing you to discover two glaciers in one memorable day.
Yes, you can choose between both options:

• With Transfer: Round-trip transport between our El Chaltén office and Punta Sur dock on Lago del Desierto (37 km along scenic gravel RP 41) in our minibuses.
• Without Transfer: If you have your own vehicle or private rental car, you can book just the lake navigation and reserve activities, meeting us directly at Punta Sur dock on Lago del Desierto.
• If booked WITH transfer from El Chaltén: The meeting point is at our central office: Av. San Martín 55, esq Trevisan, El Chaltén. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to departure (e.g., at 10:45 AM for an 11:00 AM departure).
• If booked WITHOUT transfer: The meeting point is directly at Punta Sur Dock on Lago del Desierto, arriving 15 minutes before the scheduled boat departure.
Nautical Getaway is a 45-minute scenic boat cruise on Lago del Desierto viewing the hanging glaciers and Mount Fitz Roy without landing for trekking (ideal for all ages). Great Vespignani Glacier includes the navigation plus disembarkation at the Vespignani Reserve, access to its 3 self-guided trails (green, yellow, red), hiking time, and snacks served inside the mountain dome.
Transfers and Nautical Getaway are suitable for everyone with zero physical demand. At Great Vespignani Glacier, there are 3 distinct self-guided trail levels: green (coastal, flat, 30 min), yellow (intermediate, moderate slope with panoramic lookout, 45 min), and red (upper trail to the glacier viewpoint, demanding, 150 m elevation gain, 1h 30m). You can choose whatever matches your pace.
We operate scheduled daily shuttles connecting El Chaltén with Punta Sur on Lago del Desierto (37 km of scenic gravel road through Río de las Vueltas valley), synchronized with boat departures and trailhead itineraries.
Excursions at Vespignani Reserve include a hot beverage and snack served exclusively inside the dome. If you desire a full meal, you can add our gourmet Box Lunch (with vegetarian, vegan, and celiac options) when booking online, or bring your own provisions.
Yes, navigations and transfers are completely safe and enjoyable for families with young children and travelers of all ages. At the glacier reserve, the green coastal trail is very gentle and accessible.
International Crossing (Argentina - Chile)
Yes, we operate the crossing in both directions:

• Argentina ➔ Chile direction (El Chaltén to Villa O'Higgins): Transfer from El Chaltén to Punta Sur → Full boat navigation across Lago del Desierto to Punta Norte (Border Police) → 22 km trail segment (trekking or biking) to Candelario Mancilla (Chile) → Boat navigation on Lago O'Higgins to Villa O'Higgins (Carretera Austral).
• Chile ➔ Argentina direction (Villa O'Higgins to El Chaltén): Travelers arriving from Chile cross from Candelario Mancilla to Punta Norte → Boat navigation across Lago del Desierto to Punta Sur → Scheduled shuttle transfer to El Chaltén.
A valid passport with at least 6 months of validity is mandatory to clear international immigration and customs between Gendarmería Nacional Argentina (Punta Norte) and Carabineros de Chile (Candelario Mancilla).
The crossing links El Chaltén with the Carretera Austral (Villa O'Higgins), combining overland transfers and boat navigations across Lago del Desierto and Lago O'Higgins, with a 22 km mountain trail connecting Punta Norte and Candelario Mancilla done on foot or by bicycle.
Yes. We transport bicycles and backpacks on our vessels. For the 22 km overland trail between Punta Norte and Candelario Mancilla, cyclists ride or push their bikes along the designated path.
Fitz Camp (Adventure Camp)
Fitz Camp is accessible exclusively on foot via a 7.5 km mountain hike. No vehicles can reach the camp.

The trail can be started from El Chaltén town or from Río Eléctrico (Hostería El Pilar). If starting at Río Eléctrico, you can book our scheduled or private transfer to the trailhead.
